Ethan has his fists tightly locked around Damon's shirt. They're both really bloody, and Damon is nearly half way off the railing. If he let go now, he would fall off the side, and no one knows what happens if someone falls off the side of the ship. Not that Ethan is thinking of any of those things now, he is shaking with rage, which he is trying to swallow down and failing to do just that. Every muscle in his body is tense with that violence and anger, and then-- Then there's Elena's voice, calling out to him. She will always, always reach him. No matter what else is going on so even though he is trembling with rage and violence, he hears her voice.
He hears every single word that she says. It's Elena. It's Elena.
Ethan freezes where he's standing there with Damon pressed up against the railing. It seems like he realizes it all at once, finally processes what he's seconds away from doing. Damon is going to fall into the water. He is seconds away from being the one to throw him overboard, and they don't know. Ethan doesn't actually want to throw Damon overboard because of what it would mean for Elena, which is why as soon as he realizes it despite the rage and violence still pouring through him, he stops.
He pulls Damon back on to the deck and drops him unceremoniously on to the wood there. They're surrounded in glass, and there's blood all over the place. It's a literal mess, and he can't find it in himself to care about that just yet or to actually say any words or look at her. Just yet. His jaw is still locked, and he looks like he is fucking seconds away from going after Damon again. But he's angry at himself too, he's just angry.
