[ooc: SO THEY ARE fighting for real. if your character wants to try to break it up, watch out, they're vampire and werewolf (though the cliffhanger moment i think someone could talk sense into Ethan rlkj;ea). also all the furniture/the bar/the alcohol on the deck and stuff is gonna be a bit destroyed for awhile. SORRY ABOUT THAT. someone should try to make them clean it up lol]
This has been building for awhile. Honestly, it's been building since Chicago, but being on this ship with Damon's constant jabs and comments (calling him wolfboy over and over again when there's nothing Ethan hates more than the werewolf inside of himself) and the knowing that Ethan not only fell out of a Rift after Elena when it was Damon that chose to go with her (and he hasn't seen her in decades, DECADES before now) and the knowing that they're in a relationship-- And part of always be in love with Elena even if she is his best friend first (and that dynamic can take over), Damon has always been in love with her too.
They end up on the deck alone together, and it doesn't take long to build into violence because it has been building for a long, long time. Ethan, for his part, tries to walk on by, ignoring Damon, but Damon starts in with the jabs and Ethan has a temper that he is no longer avoiding. He's done the worst as a werewolf. What more is there to avoid about it?
"I think I'm just going to have to remind you that I'm the one that was in that car with her that day." Damon is trying for the sarcasm but it's coming out sharp, angry. "Not you. You were perfectly good with walking away."
It's been building, and there's a certain level of too sharp, too real hurt when it comes to that particular accusation, and it's why the words come out in a shout, with bite. "I WAS COMING BACK."
"But you still thought you'd be good with WALKING away in the first place, didn't you? You left, and I stayed and I am always going to stay with her. I am always going to choose her like I always have, and that's not something you can say, wolfboy."
"Yes, because your obsessive fucking STALKER levels is something to wave around like a fucking flag." Ethan's hands become fists hard. The whole of him is shaking with rage and the need for violence. "Elena and I are together. She doesn't choose you, and it's her choice that is relevant here. Not yours. I understand that that is something you struggle to handle, but that never gives you the excuse to act like a jackass to me or to her. Do you understand? You need to back off or believe me, I. will. make. you."
And everything that Ethan is saying is striking a really, really hard nerve inside of Damon. The anger is growing and growing and so is the hurt, but he somehow manages to smirk (because if anyone is going to throw the first blow here, it's going to be her precious better man than Damon could ever be). He is used to burying down so much pain, and the smirk slides a bit further, something half sadistic in it. "Did you know Elena and I were together New Year's Eve? On my desk? It was really, really hot. Threw all of the things off of the desk, went wild. Y'know, now that I think about it, funny enough that was during the time you were once again strangely comfortable with walking directly out of her life--"
It is impossible to describe Ethan's reaction, because Elena and Ethan tell each other everything (almost everything, there are some things they were still working to tell each other, and it's true-- it's true that he wasn't-- it's something he regrets and guilt that he lives with every single day because the absence of Elena in his life is something he cannot--). There's a moment that it takes before it processes like he can't really wrap his head around the fact that this dickhead asshole and Elena actually-- And then it hits suddenly with visuals along with the grief and the guilt and the rage for Damon unlike he has ever fucking known it before.
Ethan lets out a noise of rage that hardly sounds human (and he's not really at the end of the day) and everything goes red all at once because he's picturing it and it's true that he wasn't there for fucking-- he wasn't there for her, and he lunges at him with both of his hands up, knocking him back so hard into the bar that they crash it open, breaking down the side of the wall completely as Damon hurdles back into the shelves of alcohol that all come crashing down on top of the both of them. Damon mutters a Finally before he shoves himself forward back at Ethan, fists are flying from both sides, and they're both bloody and furniture near by is getting broken in half or knocked to pieces along the way.
Neither one of them is really getting a leg up on the other. The rage and emotion inside of the both of them is intensely strong, and while Damon is much, much older than Ethan, Ethan's father made him and his brother to be stronger, faster than the average werewolf. It's not long at all until most of the deck has seen the results of this destruction (the furniture overturned or broken, bar broken, alcohol shattered), and Ethan manages to get that last punch in that has Damon sprawling backwards. The rage is still in every portion of his body (werewolves have so much rage, Ethan has had so much rage of his own, one and the same).
He reaches down gripping hold of Damon by the shirt and hauling him up violently against the railing (they're both bloody with bits of glass in them) as he shakes with that rage, intent on throwing him off the ship entirely at this point, because Ethan isn't exactly checking his strength. And that part inside of him that is violence and rage has clicked on.
If someone doesn't stop him, Damon is going straight into the water. Oops.

She isn't here for this kind of bullshit, is what she isn't here for. After years of tragedies, rift shenanigans, and all around distressing situations, she is about done with these kinds of self-sabotaging stunts involving male wounded egos. Far be it for her to expect two grown men to act like two grown men.
... That said, she doesn't want to see anyone fall over board, much less be killed; regardless of her feelings on the situation, she loves the two men in question, albeit in very different ways. Part of her just knew it would be them. She has been trying to keep the peace and making sure things remain as smooth as possible, but this is Damon and this is Ethan and it might've been asking for too much.
As soon as she hears the commotion, she races up the stairs leading to the upper deck of the ship. She goes as fast as her legs will take her, only coming to an abrupt, screeching halt once pieces of shattered glass crunch underneath her boots. She lets out a disbelieving, sharp breath as she lifts her gaze back up and surveys the wreckage of whatever is left of the deck, before her eyes land on the two of them hovering near the railing. Her heart leaps to her throat, the emotion clenching tightly in her chest as she moves toward them.
"Ethan, stop!" she calls out; she has no idea what happened between them or what was said. In this particular moment, that isn't what matters to her. "Put him down. We don't know what happens if anyone goes overboard. Please."
1/2
He hears every single word that she says. It's Elena. It's Elena.
Ethan freezes where he's standing there with Damon pressed up against the railing. It seems like he realizes it all at once, finally processes what he's seconds away from doing. Damon is going to fall into the water. He is seconds away from being the one to throw him overboard, and they don't know. Ethan doesn't actually want to throw Damon overboard because of what it would mean for Elena, which is why as soon as he realizes it despite the rage and violence still pouring through him, he stops.
He pulls Damon back on to the deck and drops him unceremoniously on to the wood there. They're surrounded in glass, and there's blood all over the place. It's a literal mess, and he can't find it in himself to care about that just yet or to actually say any words or look at her. Just yet. His jaw is still locked, and he looks like he is fucking seconds away from going after Damon again. But he's angry at himself too, he's just angry.
2/2
Throw him over.
Then Elena interrupts and well, here he is on the floor of the deck instead of crashing into the water (all the bones breaking). Damon swallows thickly through all that anger as his wounds start to heal. Vampire thing. Ethan's will take much longer. Oops.
"Hi Elena. Nice of you to join the party," Damon says from his spot, and despite the attempt at sarcasm, there's an underlying anger to his tone still too as he looks back up at Ethan.
She doesn't choose you.
No one ever does.

She doesn't have to know the details to understand the bare bones of what happened. It doesn't escape her notice this shortly follows Damon and Elena's own conversation in which she told him she and Ethan were together. It also doesn't escape her notice Damon is Damon - he lashes out, he hurts people and he hurts himself, and maybe it was too much to hope that it was ever going to be different than that. (She isn't used to seeing Ethan's angry side, but they've talked about that, as well.)
Elena can see Damon's wounds are already starting to heal whereas Ethan's are not. She moves over to Ethan's side, placing a hand gingerly on his arm, eyes drawn to the blood all over him. The blood all over Damon, whether he is healing or not. There's accusation in her expression, laced with anger but most of all hurt.
"What are you doing?" she asks with recrimination.
It's hard to know who she is addressing right now. THE LIKELIEST POSSIBILITY IS ITS BOTH.

it was Damon that went in that car with her. It's Damon that has made that choice every single time).
There's never enough growth to stop him from being a terrible person. rows quite enough to stop being damaging, self sabotaging (and he never will, and he has always known that the things that he wants are not meant for the likes of him, he'd destroy them if he ever got them).
"Having fun, bonding," he says with sarcasm dripping off of each word, and his gaze meets Ethan's as they stand there, something almost threatening for a second before he looks over at Elena with a smirk (that self sabotaging smirk that she'll recognize immediately). "Discussing the past. I must have said something that struck a nerve."
no subject
He can't even feel the pain of all the parts of him that are bleeding (and the parts that may be broken now for all he knows, they went at each other hard, and he knows he heard bones crack, Damon's healing so much faster than him and that makes Ethan even angrier). Ethan wants to make him bleed again and leave him fucking bleeding-- tear him apart with it.
It's Elena's hand against his arm that stops him. It's the hurt in her voice, and his eyes burn with that emotion and that rage and he can't swallow it. And he still can't find any words like his voice has been swallowed up. He isn't even sorry about doing this even if he knows he should be. He is fucking tired of being treated like shit by Damon.
He knows what Damon is doing, trying to show that it was Ethan that started it like that somehow makes him better in all this. Maybe it does. Ethan doesn't give a fuck.
There are the words.
"And I attacked him."
He can own it.

The flame rises to her cheeks. She doesn't need to ask for an elaboration. She knows what he is talking about. Her eyes close briefly, her jaw already setting, and when she opens, she doesn't mask the fury or the betrayal that crosses her features. Whether he acknowledges the hurt or not, he is going to see it. Growth or not, this is still Damon.
He isn't snapping her brother's neck but he's still doing something that hurts her. If Ethan was ever to find out about that night, it was supposed to be through Elena, but once again, Damon has made the decision for the both of them.
The truth is she has nothing to feel bad about, so she refuses to. Elena was single during her whole stay in Chicago, and she was free to do what she pleased - free to learn from her mistakes and free to own them, as well. She has felt bad and guilty for things that are her fault and for things that are not her fault for far too long. She isn't seventeen, this isn't her bedroom, and she isn't holding her dead brother in her arms. She is standing and she is facing him - facing her own choices - and she is not letting him get away with it.
"Are you done?" she asks flatly. Yes, she is speaking to both of them still.
no subject
What he can never have not with Elena, not with anyone, because of who and what he is. He is a terrible, damaging thing who doesn't know how to love.
Damon sees it all. He sees the betrayal and the fury both of them crossing over her face (and yes, he sees the hurt too and it hurts like every single time he sabotages himself, like every single time he destroys what he wants, the relationships that he has with people that he loves.
He will never stop destroying.)
And it's been decades, but he's ruined this in the shortest of times, hasn't he?
Damon meets her gaze, and he doesn't look away even with the strength of all his emotions (upset and anger and hurt and loneliness). and I don't get hurt. This is not the Elena she was when they first fell through into Chicago. She's changed and grown (and he will never grow enough).
His voice is low when he speaks, "Yes."

The ship's brighter, but she wouldn't necessarily call it better. A bit more crowded, that's for sure.
"Oh, don't mind me. Continue! I'm enjoying this."

Where Damon lands unceremoniously.
2/2
He's about to say something about the fact when Ethan punches him in the jaw and then tosses him back on to the deck.
Damon grimaces, shooting daggers back at the werewolf before he looks up at Anna from his spot on the deck, sliding a hand over his jaw. "...I thought you were dead."
no subject
As far as she was concerned, Ethan handing his ass to him was karma finally kicking in.
"I was, but it's Mystic Falls." She hops off the railing and strolls closer. "You of all people should know people have a bad habit of actually staying dead in that town."
no subject
For his part, Damon is tilting his head, shaking it in response, because-- "I haven't been in Mystic Falls in a long, long time, and when I was there, the people who died stayed dead. You never saw them again."
Granted, he was not there ultimately very long. The last day he was there they'd saved Elena from being kidnapped, and he went into her room to make a confession that he would then compel her to forget. I can't be selfish with you, he'd said except he is. He's selfish with her all the time, and he knows he doesn't deserve her.
That he never could.
no subject
"You do when someone pulls down the veil between the real world and the Other Side. You can't tell me you don't remember that."
no subject
Damon smiles at him, waving as he leaves. The smile is half a smirk because he is that much of a jackass. Then he looks back at Anna, lifting an eyebrow. Well, the more that he hears about the future of Mystic Falls, the more he's grateful that he got out of it even if there was no choice in that.
"Didn't happen to me. This ship pulls people out from different times and different universes, and shortly after you died, I landed in Chicago and never saw Mystic Falls again." It was probably a few weeks or months after she died. "Not surprised to hear that town went even further to hell in a hand basket while I was away."

There's a burst of vampire speed, and he's shoving Ethan back with one hand while grabbing hold of Damon with the other. He doesn't plan on following through with the fight any further than that, but that doesn't necessarily mean much when you're dealing with an angry werewolf.
Or an angry vampire for that matter.
Regardless, Stefan is wedging himself between them, planning on being that hard line if nothing else, when he sees exactly who it is that he shoved and he frowns. "Ethan?"
He hasn't seen the werewolf since the Ball which feels like ages ago now, and he never really knew the man. He knows that he and Elena are together but he hasn't actually seen it for himself. But once he manages to put two and two together, he rolls his eyes.
"Do you ever get tired of instigating Elena's boyfriends?" He turns to face his brother. "I think you need a new hobby."
1/2
He falls back when Stefan shoves him, and a part of him that's beyond himself is already fighting to get back at Damon even as Stefan has hold of him. He just wants to hit him a few more fucking times, which is why he's already rushing back until he hears his name and he blinks... stares.
Suddenly stopping where he's standing, swallowing.
"Stefan."
2/2
His little brother always has a habit of saving his life even when Damon isn't all that concerned with being saved.
"No, I find it highly entertaining actually, and I usually have a really good point that I'm trying to make, which I think I did," Damon says with a smirk like now, it is absolutely true that Ethan has failed to be with Elena, failed to choose her again and again. He's abandoned her at least twice for long periods of time. Ethan wasn't with her at the end of the world. Damon was. It was supposed to be him with her in a new universe and not Damon with his decades alone.
"Otherwise he wouldn't have been so angry that he felt the need to attack me."
no subject
This totally isn't awkward at all.
And yes, Damon, Stefan is always going to continue to save your stupid butt, whether you like it or not - whether he should or not - because you are his brother and no one gets to actually kill you but him. Not that Stefan would ever actually kill him, but they're Salvatores. The sentiment says it all.
Stefan presses his lips into a thin line when Damon continues to talk, and he just ... sighs. Because really, Damon? Really?
"Why do I have a feeling your point was something along the lines of figuring out just how easily you could push his buttons?"
1/2
No, it is not awkward in the slightest.
They have all been in love with Elena Gilbert, and they are all three here together in the same space. Ethan thought Elena's feelings for Stefan and Damon were why she could not possibly have any for him that night of the ball. The way she looked at him, he'd made some assumptions, some terrible assumptions that stole a lot of his time away from-- from Elena.
It was his fault for assuming, but he definitely saw the feelings that Elena had for Stefan in that moment, and it's-- it is definitely something he remembers. Now. Awkwardly. The rage is strong enough though that it kind of outshines that awkward.
And now they're... now they are all here, all three of them who have been in love with Elena, and Ethan isn't quite leaving yet. His jaw locks further at what Damon says, and he's already starting to walk back toward him with his fists tightly wound at his sides.
2/2
"No. My point was that of the two of us, I have been chosen to be with her and go where she is every single time. I have not ever failed to be by her side. Of the three of us here who all have our feelings for Elena and our history with her. Hi," Damon says with a slow, slow smirk. "Really, if we want to get technical... it's been me that's made that choice time and time again to be by her side. Me."
He reaches up his hand with that sarcastic, bitter expression on his face, the violent, hateful thing.
"Yet somehow-- S O M E H O W it is this asshole, wolfboy who ends up in that world with her. It's him. After he abandoned her for months, after he did not choose to go with her when the world ended, it's him--"
YES that would be Ethan rushing forward and trying to punch Damon again. Sorry, Stefan.
no subject
Stefan wedges himself between Ethan and his brother, one hand on both of their chests and keeping that distance with every ounce of vampire strength he has. Because yes, while they all love her, while they all will always care about Elena, they all approach it in different ways.
Stefan learned that he needed to let her go a long time ago. Ethan is just getting the chance to love her, and maybe Damon never will, but in the end the question isn't who loves her the most or who chose her - it's about who Elena chooses.
"You can't blame him for how the rifts work, Damon." It's illogical and stupid and only going to make things worse. There's too much history here already. "And it doesn't matter who was where. What matters is that Elena made her choice. Elena. Pissing him off isn't going to do you any favors and you know that."
He takes a breath and turns back to Ethan. "And you need to learn how to not let him get under your skin. Believe me, I'm well aware of how impossible that is, but try. For the sake of no one getting thrown overboard. Because he's not going to stop being an ass any time soon, but you can't attack him every time he tries."

i am so sorry
She's not even sure she's met one, either.
The heated arguement was mostly lost on her from her quiet place on the deck. She was too far off to really hear what exactly was being said. But what she did know was that someone... well, somepeople were pissed. It's not long before she creeps about and looks down onto the lower part of the deck to investigate.
She's just in time for the fight to well and truly erupt, the noise she hears of something so purely rageful it scares her half to death, and part of her wants to hide away from it before she even gets a glimpse of the two men on the deck below.
She's frozen to the spot watching in horror at the brawl, her heart trembling in her chest. Is this what it's going to be like, one day? Watching this happen over and over again until someone's dead? Helen is neither a vampire nor a werewolf. She is an angel of death and despite the fact she hasn't seen anyone's death here - this could end up in a one. Her mind screams danger and she knows she's not ready to see all this yet - she wants it to stop. She wants it to end.
One of them is about to throw the other overboard--
Helen makes a sound of her own. She can't stand back any more. It's almost like a scream, something terrified and desperate and she shouldn't be here and she shouldn't be interfering and she wants to-- oh god, she wants to go home now. She lets out that sound until her lungs empty, until she feels her wings tear at her back and she's vaulting over the railings, falling several metres onto the trashed deck below.
She lands with little grace, but unhurt, and stumbles a few steps toward the pair. "Stop! Stop it! Now! Please! No more fighting!"
omg no being sorry at all
"...I--"
He locks his jaw.
Words are not a thing that are happening easily or at all.

"But we were just getting started."
He even winks Helen's way
Because he is that much of an asshole.
