Except now it was Elena who was the center of his universe and not Katherine. That was for the best. When she saw Katherine, decades prior to her reappearing in Mystic Falls, the vampire cared not for the location of the brothers she turned. Anna had even brought them up at one point, mentioned how they were likely still out there, and she hadn't batted so much as an eyelash at the thought of it — even if she supposedly still cared a bright torch for Stefan.
Or did. Her tenses are little off since coming here.

It was more complicated than that, of course. It wasn't strictly over her and she knows that. Damon's anger came at the fact he chose to go with Elena when the end of the world came, and the rifts decided to split them up. The world he ended up in was cruel, and she wouldn't wish it on anyone, not even Damon. It doesn't excuse his actions, and Elena will always hold him accountable for them, but she grows tense at the reminder all the same.
She wants to ask if that's how they fought over Katherine, but does she really want to know? Does she really want to admit she's wondered?
"It's not going to happen again," she says. Elena is going to make sure of that.

The vampire shrugs. "Damon is Damon."
