[ greetings, voyagers.
this is sadly not the elena you are likely used to by now. no, this is an elena that has ended up in once-golden city called teleios, and is currently working off her substantial debt in the alleged hope she may one day see utopia. there are gods, dragons, and realms unlike she never imagined. she likes it there more than she'll admit to, and is perennially aggravated by it in other ways.
she is also not expecting to once again be led to a red door when she exits the library she currently works at, but it's also not the strangest thing that's ever happened to her. she just doesn't remember it whenever she gets sent back to pre-utopia.
for reasons no one will ever be able to figure out, the lower deck is flooded with teleporting kittens and puppies. y'know, the kind you're used to from the chicago. the kittens and puppies that don't age, are surprisingly self-sufficient, and pick their owner to soulbond with. so be careful. because they are everywhere. everywhere.. ]
What the ...

( OOC: TREAT THIS AS A PARTY POST IF YOU'D LIKE. EVERYONE SHOULD GET TO ENJOY PUPPIES. )

(For the record, there's nothing wrong with her. She's just happy, which she understands is a foreign emotion for most people to associate with a Hale, but contrary to popular belief, they do feel it. Quite acutely, in fact.)
She just likes dogs, okay? Animals are better than people, because they don't take a whole lot of work to figure out. Especially puppies, who are really just armfuls of awkward paws, fluffy ears, and boundless unconditional love. The kind of love that doesn't come with restrictions or the need to play trust games or anything in between.
It's almost like the way family loves. The way that her family used to love, before the fire took that all away.
BUT THOSE ARE DEPRESSING THOUGHTS AND WE ARE NOT HERE FOR THAT. We are here for the adorable that is Cora getting loved on by a pile of fur and claws, tongue swiping at the bottom of her chin as she laughs and scritches him behind the ears. Nice to meet you too, puppy friend.
Unlike the minion she picked up a while ago, she actually wants to keep this one.]
no subject
He seems to really like you.
[ or is it a she? whoever they are, it seems like they've already chosen cora for good. ]
no subject
Derek might need more convincing, but Derek's opinion on the matter is low priority at the moment because HOW COULD YOU SAY NO TO THAT FACE? Clearly if he does he's wrong.]
Yeah, seems like he does. I've always been good with dogs, though.
[Benefits of being part canine.]
no subject
elena sets down the dalmatian, and quickly kneels down next to it so the puppy doesn't think elena is abandoning him. scritching its ears, she turns back to cora again. ]
My brother had a dog. [ that's about as much experience elena has with them, although she is totally pro-puppy. she'd just never think to get one on her own. her life has hardly been built for a pet. ] The relationship had been a work-in-progress.
[ as in, thor never listened to elena and only seemed to pay attention when she had a treat in her hand. jeremy would get a kick out of it each and every time. ]

it was almost like a vacation. almost.
she's kneeling as much as her outfit will allow before a golden retriever puppy that's enthusiastically licking her hand. ] Now just where did you come from?
no subject
That's what I'd like to know.
[ it's murmured softly and not without some contemplation. it's kind of hard to speak when a baby dalmatian is aggressively licking at your face, but she's trying. as soon as elena attempts to put it back on the ground, it poofs back into her arms, clearly not having any of it. elena sighs, keeping it in her arms. it is awfully cute. she'd just really rather not disappear from where she'd been. ]
Do you have any idea where we are, by any chance? [ you might be her only hope, relena. ]
no subject
[ the only thing she's certain of is that her security detail is losing their minds, heero's been drawn out of the woodwork, and her brother is probably halfway back from mars about now. honestly, she hates the way the world gets so riled up when something happens to her, as if she really is the glass princess meant to be kept on a shelf out of harm's way. she can take care of herself. (and thankfully, though she doesn't know it yet, time stops back home. her people will be none the wiser.) ]
no subject
the way teleios works, even if you've been gone for a really long time, it could've just been minutes there. then again, the opposite of that is true, as well. she doesn't want caroline and the others to think she has abandoned them again, but there's also nothing she can do about that, so she focuses on what she can do. while the dalmatian keeps on licking her face. he's super friendly. ] You didn't come through a red door too, did you?
[ it was kind of hard to miss, what without the lack of walls and only fog surrounding it. ]

...he is not expecting to find her surrounded by kittens and puppies. there is staring at the entire group of them. some of the kittens and puppies are chasing each other right over the top of his feet, and he shakes his head.
other things john young has never done? owned a pet.]
...are all these yours? [there's a tiny, amused smile because he knows for an absolute fact that that... would be impossible so he's mostly joking.
also, given her reaction to the puppy teleporting into her arms... she's probably as surprised by them as he is. he can teleport himself, but he's never seen kittens and puppies that can do so.]
no subject
[ let us timey wimey that teleios!elena is the one that would've stumbled on drunk!john so that she can remember the thread because it's what i want and i do what i want here. /hairflip.gif
anyway.
the dalmatian keeps aggressively licking elena's face, like its been doing in each and every thread because apparently it doesn't think it's conveyed its adoration adequately just yet. the intensity with which it lunges for elena, however playful and doting, has her taking a step back as she tries to keep it in her arms. ]
... Actually, I'm pretty sure that one is yours. [ you know, the cute pup that's now pawing at john's denim jeans while it stands on its hind legs. ]
no subject
[YES, the narration was hoping this timey-wimey would happen so we can both do what we want /thinhairflip.gif
john lifts his eyebrows in amusement, because the puppy is seriously aggressively licking her face like claiming her type of licking her face. he folds his arms across his chest with a tiny smile before he frowns at what she says, and then he looks down at that puppy.
and shakes his head.]
...no. Hey, no. I don't do... pets. I don't do animals period. C'mon... [he gently nudges the puppy very gently, but the pup then teleports on to his shoulder with a woof and john has to use his super quick reflexes to catch the pup in both arms as it tumbles downward.]
no subject
somehow she almost manages to pull off all three. before she can answer, however, the teleportation happens. ]
... Pretty sure.
[ she's the one that sounds amused now as the puppy tumbles into john's arms. the fact john has caught them has only solidified what the puppy already knew - master and owner. now its paws settle on john's shoulders, and it will begin to lick john's face as aggressively as the dalmatian's was licking elena's. you're welcome. ]

The dog snarls, and Zuko reels back, not wanting to get bitten. He drops it and it scurries off towards the pool with the other puppy trailing after him while Zuko unceremoniously tips over the lounge chair, landing with a thud on his back. For a moment, he makes no move to get up. Just lays there, glaring up at the sun, as if Agni himself is at fault for this.
"I hate my whole life— Hey, hey, stop that! Cut it out, that's real gold!" The turtleduck he just rescued is now sitting on his chest, knawing on the gold embroidery of his robes, fluffing its wings happily. Zuko has to grab hold of its shell and pry it off with a good tug, holding the turtleduck up over his head. "Is that supposed to be a thank you?" Quack. "You're welcome."
Untangling himself from the chair is awkward with the turtleduck in hand, but he manages, setting the little guy (or girl?) on its feet and giving it a good pat on the head as he resumes course towards the stern of the ship. ...with the turtleduck at his heels. He stops, and the turtleduck bumps into him.
"You can't come with me." Oh really, Zuzu? The turtleduck seems to think otherwise.
no subject
Elena Gilbert watched the whole show, from the turtleduck's appearance to its chasing after Zuko, and she'd be lying if she said it hadn't been a little bit amusing. Not that she'll admit to that. She does have manners. It's why she moves forward once Zuko starts to untangle himself from the chair, in hopes of helping him, but he seems to manage fine without her.
"They're not going to listen," she says regretfully with a sigh. The dalmatian is still slobbering all over her, reminding her that it seems to think otherwise, too.
They're awfully cute, yes, but it's also impractical for the ship - or whoever sent these animals here - to expect the Voyager crew to take care of them when their very own presence within this ship is so erratic and unpredictable. What happens when they go back to wherever it is they belong? What happens to the turtleduck?
SOMEONE TELL HER WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TURTLEDUCK.
no subject
And now the only thing remotely resembling his world is the turtleduck nipping at upward curve in the toe of his boot, as lost and alone as he is.
Zuko picks it up before he turns to the girl. He knew there were other people here, but he'd been consciously avoiding them after a woman sunbathing one of the upper decks gasped in horror at the sight of his face. He wasn't in the mood to deal with those kinds of reactions today.
"Yeah, I kind of noticed that."
He stared at the dalmatian in her arms, trying to discern what exactly it was. Leopard-dog? Skunk-dog? It couldn't be just a dog... There were no such things.
no subject
She's never been put off very easily. She held Stefan's face in her hands as he vamped out, showed her the real monster that stirred within him every moment of every day, begging to be let out. He'd feared the way she would see him after he stopped hiding himself from her, but Elena only loved him more. She doesn't have anything on her face that would show the scars that are riddled on her body, but sometimes she thinks it should. People should get to look at the brutal truth right in the eye.
(They'd be sickened by her if they could. If she wore all her scars inside out.)
"Maybe if we find the room they came from, they'll be sent back to where and with who they belong," Elena suggests.
Even as the dalmatian stares at her with big, accusing eyes and she feels two feet tall as those eyes all but say: How dare you, Elena Gilbert. How dare you. But it's for its own good, you see. She doesn't want to leave the dalmatian behind when she inevitably gets sent back.

of course, to anyone else, he's simply a teenage boy looking over the railing of the ship. ]
you get rafe so i don't oversaturate you with too much elena...
[ the animals may not be interested in mamoru, but they're definitely taking an interest in rafe. one pup in particular is clinging to his pantleg, and every time rafe tries to move, the puppy's hind legs lock further around rafe's ankles. it kind of makes his attempts impossible, since rafe doesn't want to hurt them.
he's close enough to the railing that mamoru is probably getting a front row seat to rafe's current predicament. ]

the whole trying to figure out this ship plan so that he doesn't have to go back to the terrible world that he is from? damon is waiting for that to have consequences, and when it does, he's going to be there to make sure to take as much of the damage as he possibly can.
because no, elena gilbert. he has also been trying to look into things himself, but the ship really doesn't seem to like him very much. it's a problem.
there is elena and a lot of puppies and kittens. some of the kittens hiss at him while some of the puppies are like OH HEY :DDDD /tail wags.]
....Elena, I don't think you can keep all of these pets.
[:') he tries to sound all chiding even if he knows she wouldn't actually think she could keep them all. just. y'know. damon >>]

maybe it's stupid, to be so relieved and grateful that he is the person that remembers and loves her, when they are who they are, but it's how she feels.
(she's never told him he's in teleios. in fact, they don't really talk about teleios or the world he ended up in much at all, and she's kind of okay with that. she knows what she needs to. and she's not giving up.) ]
I don't plan to.
[ there's a wryness to her answer as she looks over at him. what a disconcerting visual: damon salvatore surrounded by hissing kittens and adoring puppies. ] They just ... showed up out of nowhere. What was I supposed to do?
[ wait, don't answer that. she doesn't think she wants to know. ]
no subject
damon is relieved and grateful to be on this ship even though he knows it won't last. this isn't where he gets to stay, where any of them get to stay. he's relieved she's here even if he shows it in his own damon way.
(they don't need to talk about the worlds they are from. when they're together, they can act like it's the same as always, like they're best friends, like there is not the absence of that where they're from and it isn't painful even though it is).]
Open your own pet store? Make them costumes and put on a show? Hand out kittens and puppies to everyone you meet?
[what a way to brighten people's days, elena gilbert. :') he... would not be at all surprised to learn this is exactly what she has been doing. a dog is pawing at his shoe and damon raises an eyebrow at it.]

there has to be something. every muscle of his body is tense and prepared and ready for that something to happen. and soon.
what he is not expecting to do is run into someone else that he knows and loves and cares about (someone who is still family). someone who he not too long ago had an incredibly painful breakup with... and she is surrounded by puppies and kittens. he stares for a moment, shakes his head like he doesn't quite believe his eyes.
the ache spreads through his chest helplessly in recognition, but it doesn't hurt as much as it used to (there's been the ball, there's been times they've seen each other again and talked).]
...Elena?
no subject
she is currently being aggressively licked by the dalmatian that's chosen her, who only stops said aggressive licking at the sound of james' voice saying elena's name. like master ??? being summoned by huge bear ?? why for ????
elena is still smiling when she turns to the sound, and it's only then her expression turns into something more confused. there isn't, sadly, any recognition to be found. the dalmatian is now currently pawing at james' shoe, before he leans down to take a sniff. it's only then elena brings herself back to her feet. ]
... Do I know you? [ because she is pretty sure she'd remember meeting someone that looks like he does. ]
no subject
but she looks beautiful as ever standing in the sunlight, holding on to the puppy in her hands who loves her. why wouldn't the puppy? there is so much to love about her, any version of her..
he shakes his head, and it takes him a moment (working through it. never as hollow as you want to be, always more hollow than you want to be. somehow both in one.)]
No.
[the word is only slightly strangled and low before he takes in a breath and releases it again. burning through his chest as he meets her gaze slowly. words come slow like they have a tendency to.]
But I know you.
Another... version of you.
