open | super super super rusty brief surprise revival...
Quick and painless — that was a lie. There was nothing quick or painless about having your neck broken. Maybe it seemed quick and relatively painless to the inflicter and the observer, but to the one experiencing that 'quick and painless' death, the brief moments that seemed to go on for hours and sharp spikes of pain unlike anything you've ever felt before said otherwise.
It hurt. It hurt a lot, and the darkness that enveloped him while he waited out his return wasn't exactly what you'd call comforting. Unsettling was more like it. There was nothing. Nothing but a dark veil cast over you, like you were underwater and unable to surface.
But eventually that ice cracked and Matt surged past it, taking a great big gulp of air that went rushing into his lungs so powerfully it startled him. He bolted upright, bumping against the cool metal of the railing that gnashed against the line of his spine. Vision still blurry, a rush of sounds assaulted him: birds, footsteps, voices, and the distinct sound of waves slapping against the side of a boat.
He'd only been on a boat once, with Elena's family out at the lake before her parents passed away, but the sound of water rushing against the side of a boat stuck with him as one of the most soothing sounds he's ever heard.
It had him twisting around and grasping the railing to peer down over it, to try and get an idea of where the hell he was. Had Damon gone back on his word and done away with his body? Had Elena? Had their attempt to get her to turn it back on gone awry?
Matt couldn't say. All he knew was that he wasn't where he should be, this wasn't exactly a boat, and there was a strong possibility that the ring hadn't worked like Damon said he would and death was having a good laugh at his expense over daring to trust the word of a Salvatore.

"My mom's here, actually."
The reunion had been tearful, to say the least.
"You missed the party she threw a while back."
Because of course, if Carol Lockwood gets a second chance at life she throws parties.

"I missed a Lockwood party?" He asks as he draws back, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "Just how many of us are there?"
no subject
"You did. She'll forgive you I think as long as I take you to say hi to her now," He agrees with a small smile. Getting his mother back was a gift Tyler never expected to have. He won't squander it.
"I'm not sure. Other than my mom I only really talk to Caroline and Elena. But I think both the Salvatores are here too. And Rebekah."
He might be watching his friend's reaction on that last name.

Matt tries not to look relieved when he says that Rebekah's here. He's been slowly edging into an amicable relationship with her, growing closer to the Original sister the more his friends draw away from him. Elena's a lost cause, Caroline and Bonnie are gearing up for college, and Tyler's on the run. That left Matt alone with only the girl who was still, somehow, paying attention to him and taking note of how lonely and miserable he was when nobody else seemed to notice.
Not that he held that against Tyler. It wasn't his fault he was forced to flee the town. No, that was Klaus, and he was glad the hybrid wasn't here.
"And someone hasn't pushed them overboard yet?" The Salvatores, not Rebekah. There was a time when he would've wished the same, but now... He's not entirely sure how he feels now. "They're nothing but trouble."
Everything was fine until Stefan and Damon came back to town.

After how much Tyler's lost, that's meant a lot to him.
"Believe me, it's been tempting."
Tyler is not a Salvatore fan, by a long shot. He tends to avoid them as much as he can. But for now he's simply knocking on his mom's door and calling out.
"Hey Mom, I have a surprise for you."

She glances back at the sound of Tyler's voice just enough to confirm it's him, before glancing back to her board again. She doesn't notice Matt at first, more focused on what she was working on.
"Maybe it's the fact that that statement has come with extremely varied results over the years, I feel the need to ask if it's a good surprise or bad surprise."
carol's next ball should be for new year's js
"Hey Mrs. Lockwood."
it totes should be.
Not that he hasn't had his share of bad ones. Tyler got into a lot of trouble when he was younger -- the hot headed temper that came with the werewolf gene rarely served him well. That combined with the tight leash Richard tried to him on sometimes --
Well, at least he doesn't get in as much trouble these days. Of course, the trouble he gets in is about 300% more deadly but this is why he doesn't tell his mother about the time he spent on the run for his life from Klaus.
oooooh yes, i can definitely do this.
Which extends to hugs right now.
"Seems like the ship is looking to collect us all."

Or, rather, the world they were supposed to live in. Matt's starting to see that living on this boat may not be so bad.
"Just as long as it doesn't decide to collect the people we don't want here." Like Klaus.
Or Kol.
Or Finn, who may or may not remember that he was the one to stake him.
He'd just rather not think about all those options.

But Tyler is constantly vigilante, all too away Klaus could show up on the ship any day now. And he won't let the hybrid take his mother from him twice. That just isn't an option.
But he doesn't voice his paranoid Klaus issues too often so much as he just keeps them to himself.

Then she takes a step back and glances around. "Can I get you guys anything? I may have some soda or something."

He looks down at his hand and the dark, enchanted stone in the Gilbert ring. After a moment of consideration, Matt tugs it off and grabs Tyler's wrist so he can press the ring into his friend's hand.
"Here. She needs this more than I do."
no subject
"You sure, man?"
no subject
"Sure about what?"
no subject
"Giving you the Gilbert Ring."
He lets that hang in the air, unsure of whether or not Carol knows what the Gilbert Ring is. All the Gilberts who were on the Founder's Council wore it, so there's a good possibility she has prior knowledge of it.

In case something, or someone, ends up on the ship that tries to hurt her again

Magic is complicated, at best. Dangerous at it's worst.
She glances between the two boys for a moment, trying to make sense of it all, and she eventually looks back at Matt again. "Are you sure? You're the one who's going to have to go back, not me." If he goes back. It's hard to tell with the boat.
