[ he regards the stake for a moment. then looks up to lottie and makes the decision to grasp it more firmly, and hold it away from her. ]

No. You're gonna stab me with it, aren't you?

[ he's still obviously racking his brain, arm stretched behind him and away from her as he thinks. ]
