[There's a long pause and a deep breath as she tries to actually form the words, but even then it isn't easy. There's a lot of history that goes with it, a lot of implications that come with a kid who's father drinks, but sometimes all you have to do is say it for it to make sense.]

My dad drinks a lot.

[She glances back to him and gives a bit of a shrug.]

I've pretty much gotten it down to a science at this point.

[John looks up at her slowly at what she says, and his chest clenches with something familiar and painful. More than anything, there's understanding in his gaze. He never tried to take care of his foster father, never cared for him at all, but he can imagine how difficult it would have been.]

You shouldn't have to do that. Ever.

My foster father... drank a lot. I never took care of him, but I took care of the things he was too busy drinking to take care of himself.
