Yeah. [It's fair to say that he can't really hide that, and it's not that he wants to. He just-- he doesn't know how else to operate. Every good, meaningful thing can be used against you if you admit to it.] My world- It's not safe for people like me, for my species.
[They don't' consider themselves human. He doesn't consider himself human (but he's not exactly a tomorrow person either, is he?)] We have to... stay hidden, and I've been trying to help my people stay hidden except I messed things up a lot of times and got kicked out tonight.

She reaches over and gives his hand a squeeze.]
I'm sorry.

Thanks. Me too. [it's said quietly.] I still... shouldn't have done that. I've never done that.
Never been a big fan of the stuff. [alcohol that is.]

Me either.
[It turns people into something they're not - or maybe it just strips away the layers until the real person they are is revealed - either way, Zoe isn't fond of the results. Illusions still get destroyed, and she's not sure which is the worse option.]

[And not from drinking it herself, but from the comment she made and the fact that she doesn't like it either.
The foster dad that he had was always an asshole, but he only got violent about it when he was drinking... and he drank all the time, used all their money on alcohol instead of feeding the kids that he was 'taking care of'. The smell of whiskey to this day can still make John feel nauseous.]

My dad drinks a lot.
[She glances back to him and gives a bit of a shrug.]
I've pretty much gotten it down to a science at this point.
[taking care of drunk people, she means.]

I'm sorry.
You shouldn't have to do that. Ever.
[that shouldn't be on her plate at all.]
My foster father... drank a lot. I never took care of him, but I took care of the things he was too busy drinking to take care of himself.

I do that sometimes too. But it's just me and him, so I don't really have anyone else to take care of.
